Workshop "Resource conservation and resource productivity: modelling approaches for assessment of economy-wide material flows and potential policy impacts ", 7/12/2016, Ecologic Institute, Berlin

On 7th December 2016, the modelling approaches of the two projects SimRess [1] and DeteRess [2] were discussed. The presentation is available via the following link:

[1] Models, potential and long-term scenarios for resource efficiency – SimRess; FKZ 3712 93 102. SimRess analysed the potential global and national impacts of German resource policy approaches.

[2] Structural and Technical Determinants of Resource Efficiency (DeteRess); FKZ 3712 93 321. DeteRess investigated selected resource efficiency technologies to identify options to act for German resource policy until 2030.

Conference "Decarbonisation and Resource Efficiency - 100% Renewable Energy and More"

On 8th November 2016 more than 100 participants from academia, policy, business and civil society discussed the nexus between decarbonisation and dematerialisation at Ludwig-Erhard-Haus in Berlin. The presentations held and a brief summary of the main discussions are available via the conference website of German Environment Agency (UBA).

Project group modeling workshops on system conceptualisation, Fall 2014

What does a successful resource policy look like and what does it have to take into account? Is the current German resource policy (ProgRess) sufficient to secure the prosperity of our society without compromising the ecological carrying capacity of the Earth?

In order to answer these questions and carry out model simulations, it is necessary to understand the system of resource utilisation and its dynamics. To this end, we undertook a series of two external and one internal group modelling workshop in order to create an integrated understanding of the system based on  an exchange of the different perspectives of the social, economic and political actors, using the "causal loop diagramming" method. On this foundation we identifid policy levers and provided the basis for a comprehensive simulation model.

Please see the write-ups of these events below.

First Group Modeling Workshop

The first group modeling workshop for developing an integrated understanding of the system influencing resource utilisation in Germany took place on the 8-9 September 2014 in Berlin. Please find the workshop results in the report "SimRess Stakeholder Participated Group Modelling Workshop 1".

Second Group Modeling Workshop

The second group modeling workshop for developing an integrated understanding of the system influencing resource utilisation in Germany took place on the 13-14 November 2014 in Berlin. Please find the workshop results in the report "Project Stakeholder Participated Group Modelling Workshop 2".

An overview of the project as well as the challenges in the field of resource utilization and efficiency are given in the presentation of Prof. Harald Sverdrup "Preparing Germany for resource sustainability to 2040".

Trendworkshop

As part of the SimRess project a "horizon scanning" was performed, a method to identify upcoming trends. The results were summarised in a trend report. In a newspaper and Internet research over 300 individual trends were identified and grouped into twelve trend themes. The trends and trend themes were verified and expanded in telephone interviews with experts as well as in a "trend workshop". Furthermore interconnections between the trends and trend themes were identified. The trend workshop was held in Berlin on 17 - 18 March 2014.
